Sean Casey, a former street cop who worked his way through law school, has just joined the New York district attorney's office as a prosecutor. His father, Liam, still on the force, is badly wounded during the arrest of a major drug dealer, and Sean is assigned to handle the prosecution. The trial, and the publicity surrounding it, lift him quickly, but the case opens onto something larger: evidence that corruption runs through the police department where his father served, reaching people close to him.
Sidney Lumet directed and wrote the screenplay, the twenty-second of the twenty-six films he directed in chronological order, following Guilty as Sin and preceding Gloria. Andy García plays Sean, with Ian Holm as Liam, James Gandolfini as Joey Allegretto, Lena Olin as Peggy Lindstrom, Shiek Mahmud-Bey as Jordan Washington and Colm Feore as Elihu Harrison. The production, backed by Paramount and Spelling Films, had a budget of about 10 million dollars and took in roughly the same amount worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a 6.7 rating from around 9,500 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from about 150 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 from 31 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores on both sites. Lumet's crime drama, running 113 minutes, examines how a single prosecution can expose the compromises beneath a city's institutions.
