Joshua Shapira is a professional hitman who takes an assignment that brings him back to Brighton Beach, the Russian immigrant neighbourhood of Brooklyn known as Little Odessa where he grew up. His father, who cut him off after learning how he earns his living and who ordered him not to come back, refuses him entry to the family home, where Joshua's mother is dying and his younger brother still looks up to him. Joshua moves into a hotel, visits his mother against his father's wishes, and renews contact with an old girlfriend. Word of his return spreads quickly through the local underworld, which has an old score to settle with him.
Little Odessa is the first feature directed by James Gray, who also wrote the screenplay, and it stands at the start of a filmography that continues through The Yards, We Own the Night, Two Lovers, The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z, Ad Astra, Armageddon Time and Paper Tiger. Tim Roth plays Joshua, with Edward Furlong as his brother Reuben, Moira Kelly, Vanessa Redgrave, Paul Guilfoyle and Natalya Andreychenko in the main roles. Around twenty credited cast members and just over a hundred credited crew worked on the production.
The film received a mixed critical response, with critics' reviews averaging 5.4 out of 10, a figure close to the moderate audience score of 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 250 votes.
