- Ron O'Neal (1937-2004) auditioned for the role of Shaft. He was not cast, as his skin tone was considered too light.
- Bumpy Jones, portrayed on screen by Moses Gunn (1929-1993), is based on Bumpy Johnson (1905-1968), a criminal boss who ruled Harlem in the first half of the 20th century.
