Gramps Is in the Resistance

Set in occupied Paris, the film follows the Bourdelle family, a household of musicians whose home has been requisitioned by the German army. While most of the family is forced into the cellar, the son, Guy-Hubert, pretends to be a timid hairdresser; in reality he leads a double life as the resistance figure the Germans fear most. Their situation grows more complicated with the presence of a German general in the house, a hidden British airman, and the family's own involvement in the underground.

Jean-Marie Poiré directed this 1983 French comedy, his third feature after Men Prefer Fat Girls and Santa Claus Is a Stinker, and the first of his films to star Christian Clavier, who appears here as Michel Taupin and also co-wrote the screenplay with Poiré and Martin Lamotte. Michel Galabru plays the family patriarch, Roland Giraud the German general, Gérard Jugnot a collaborator, and Lamotte the double-dealing son. The production, made by Les Films Christian Fechner on a budget of about 3 million dollars, assembles a large ensemble of thirty-two credited cast members.

The film's ratings sit in moderate territory, at 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 3,700 votes and 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB from some 455 votes, indicating a modest but steady audience response rather than broad acclaim.
