What's left behind the scenes
- Mystery writer James Ellroy publicly stated that he had no involvement in the making of the film. This was because David Ayer completely rewrote his screenplay, leaving only the names of some characters untouched.
- The scene with Kurt Russell in the hotel room was filmed in one take.
- The plot unfolds during the Watts riots (a district of Los Angeles) from August 11 to 17, 1965. In 1992, James Ellroy made several changes to the plot at the request of producer Caldecot Chubb, but after seeing the film, he refused to participate in its promotional campaign.
