The film was shot in a prison, and many of the roles were played by prisoners.
After its release, the film was heavily and consistently criticized when it became widely known that its director was Madeline Sackler. She is the heiress to the family that owns Purdue Pharma, a private pharmaceutical company that manufactures OxyContin. She has been accused, in particular, of the widespread distribution of opioids throughout the United States in the early 21st century. This fact was kept silent at the beginning of filming, which subsequently caused a wave of criticism, and Jeffrey Wright, who starred in the film, openly stated that he regretted his involvement in the project.
