Short description
Joe Gardner is a middle school teacher with a love for jazz music. After a successful audition at the Half Note Club, he suddenly gets into an accident that separates his soul from his body and is transported to the You Seminar, a center in which souls develop and gain passions before being transported to a newborn child. Joe must enlist help from the other souls-in-training, like 22, a soul who has spent eons in the You Seminar, in order to get back to Earth.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The subway train number is 2319. The same number appears in the 2001 animated film 'Monsters, Inc.' when a human sock enters the monster world.
  • In the initial script version, the main character was a soul named 22, not Joe.
  • The prototype for the atelier owned by Joe's mother was Advanced European Tailoring in Berkeley, California. While working on the film, the animators spent a lot of time there, making sketches and notes.
  • Initially, Joe Gardner was intended to be white. He would have been an animation enthusiast. Later, he was made a rock star, and then – a Black jazz enthusiast.
  • The character's name, 22, is a reference to the expression “Catch-22” (this is a legal, administrative, social, or logical paradox consisting of the fact that attempting to comply with a certain rule itself means violating that rule; an individual falling under such norms cannot behave rationally). In this situation, the only way to find an answer to the question of whether life is worth living is to live it.
