Short description
Steven Universe: The Movie takes place two years after the events that brought peace between Earth and the Gem homeworld. Steven, now sixteen, believes his days as the planet's protector are behind him, and he and the Crystal Gems are ready to settle into a quieter life in Beach City. That calm is broken when a massive injector appears and begins poisoning the area, and a Gem named Spinel emerges with a personal grudge against Steven and his friends. To stop her, Steven must rally the Gems and confront the threat she poses.
The film follows the animated series created by Rebecca Sugar, who directs and shares screenplay credit with Hilary Florido and Kat Morris. It is the first feature she directed, ahead of Adult Swim's The Elephant in 2025. Zach Callison voices Steven, with Deedee Magno as Pearl, Estelle as Garnet, Michaela Dietz as Amethyst and Sarah Stiles as Spinel among the twenty-one credited cast members.
At 83 minutes, the film blends action and adventure with comedy, drama and musical numbers. On IMDb it holds a 7.7 rating from more than eight thousand votes, while on TMDB it has an 8.2 from under a thousand. The audience scores are strong and broadly consistent across both, reflecting steady approval for this continuation of the series.
What's left behind the scenes
- In appearance, mannerisms, and singing style, Spinella resembles heroines from cartoons of the 1920s and 1930s.
- Spinella's voice (voiced by Sarah Stiles) was specifically designed to evoke the sounds of a childhood toy rabbit of director Rebecca Sugar's. She once forgot the toy in the backyard, found it again six months later, and discovered that six months outdoors in all weather had permanently altered its appearance. This same incident became the basis for the storyline of one episode of the animated series "Adventure Time" (2010-2018).
- Spinella's transformation is similar to the transformation shown in the anime series "Sailor Moon" (1992-1997).
- Shelby Rabara, who voiced one of the characters, is a professional tap dancer. She made several recordings of her dance as a basis for the animators when drawing the dance to the song "No matter what".
