Sakuta Azusagawa is a high school student in Fujisawa, a seaside town, and his relationship with his girlfriend Mai Sakurajima, an actress a year above him, has settled into something close to ordinary. That changes with the arrival of Shoko Makinohara, the girl who was Sakuta's first love and who once helped him through the earliest effects of adolescence syndrome. Two versions of Shoko exist at once: an adult woman and a younger girl still in middle school, and the younger one is seriously ill. The adult Shoko moves in with Sakuta and, whatever her reasons, drives a wedge between him and Mai, while Sakuta is left trying to work out what she is hiding and how to help the girl he remembers. His old wound starts troubling him again.
The film continues the story told in the Rascal Does Not Dream television series and was released in Japan in June 2019. Souichi Masui directed it from a screenplay by Masahiro Yokotani, placing it third among the director's features, after two Crayon Shin-chan films and before several later entries in this same series. Kaito Ishikawa, Asami Seto and Inori Minase voice Sakuta, Mai and Shoko, with Nao Toyama, Atsumi Tanezaki and Maaya Uchida among the supporting cast.
The film grossed about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 8.2 out of 10 from more than 6,600 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 8.2 from several hundred votes, a consistency that suggests viewers who sought the film out responded to it much the same way.
