What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming began in Venice on the day a lockdown was declared in northern Italy due to the coronavirus epidemic. Work on the film was urgently moved to Rome, but a lockdown was declared there as well.
  • During filming in Italy, twelve members of the crew tested positive for coronavirus. Because of this, when filming resumed in the UK, Tom Cruise paid half a million pounds out of his own pocket for an old cruise liner, on board which crew members and actors could live in isolation.
  • In the scene where Ethan first meets the character played by Hayley Atwell at the airport, Tom Cruise wanted to perform a key trick. It took many takes, but the scene was ultimately filmed with practically no special effects.
  • Pom Klementieff earned the nickname "Pom Cruise" for the gymnastic abilities she demonstrated during filming.
  • The character of the French actress Pom Klementieff had few lines, and she had to express her emotions mainly through gestures. To do this, she studied footage of a great crested grebe, whose movements reflected exactly what she wanted to convey – a threat.
  • Due to COVID restrictions, the film became the most expensive installment in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise to produce, the most expensive film starring Tom Cruise, and the most expensive film produced by "Paramount Pictures." Previously, the record was held by Michael Bay's sci-fi action film "Transformers: The Last Knight" (2017), which cost $217 million to produce. Initially, the insurance company "Chubb" paid "Paramount Pictures" just over $5.4 million for these delays, stating that actors could still perform even if they tested positive for COVID. In 2021, "Paramount Pictures" sued "Chubb," and a year later, the two companies reached a settlement. Another year later, "Chubb" transferred approximately $71 million to "Paramount Pictures" for pandemic-related delays in the film's production, bringing the film's budget to around $220 million.
  • The film's finale was partially shot in the Lake District in North-West England, where filming of the British horror film "Walking Against the Rain" (2022) was also taking place simultaneously. Tom Cruise even arranged for a helicopter for the crew of the British film so they could get a look at the set of the latest "Mission: Impossible" installment.
  • Long before filming, actress Pom Klementieff studied martial arts under Jessen Novelllo, a three-time world karate champion.
  • The bridge that is blown up in the finale was originally intended to be filmed in Poland, but it turned out to be under state protection as an architectural monument, so a replica of the bridge was built in the UK for filming.
