African Cats

African Cats is a nature documentary from Disneynature set in the Serengeti plains of Tanzania, where lions and cheetahs live as the dominant predators of the savanna. The film follows two families of big cats over time: a lioness raising her cub, and a cheetah mother of five young cubs. Both must hunt, protect their young and hold their ground as rival lions and other threats press in on their territory. The narrative follows the animals through the challenges of raising offspring in one of the wildest places on Earth.

Keith Scholey directed the film and co-wrote it with John Truby; Scholey also produced it with Alex Tidmarsh. It was Scholey's first feature as director, ahead of Bears, Dolphin Reef, David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet and Ocean with David Attenborough, while co-director Alastair Fothergill came to it after Deep Blue and Earth, and went on to Chimpanzee, Bears, Monkey Kingdom and later titles. Samuel L. Jackson and Patrick Stewart provide the narration in different versions.

Made for a modest 5 million dollars, the film took about 31 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its production cost. On TMDB it holds a 7.3 rating from 265 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.3 from 80 reviews, so audiences rate it noticeably higher than critics do.
