The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a 1964 French romance set in the port town of Cherbourg in 1957. Geneviève, a teenager, works in the umbrella shop run by her widowed mother. She is in love with Guy, a young auto mechanic, though her mother disapproves and would prefer a wealthier match. When Guy is drafted for two years of military service in Algeria, the couple spend their last night together and promise to wait for one another. Months pass with little word, and Geneviève, pregnant and under pressure from her mother, must decide whether to hold out for Guy's return or accept an offer of marriage from Roland Cassard, a prosperous dealer in jewellery and diamonds. The story carries their lives forward into the early 1960s.

Jacques Demy wrote and directed the film, his fourth feature after Lola, The Seven Deadly Sins and Bay of Angels. Catherine Deneuve plays Geneviève, with Nino Castelnuovo as Guy, Anne Vernon as her mother and Marc Michel as Roland. The dialogue is entirely sung, and the film is known for its brightly coloured visual design.

Released in February 1964, it earned roughly 8 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 8.8 from 70 reviews, while on TMDB it has 7.4 from 911 votes.
