The Crimson Rivers
Short description
Two murders unfold the same day, three hundred kilometres apart. In the Alps, veteran detective Pierre Niemans arrives at a university town where a body has been found mutilated and left in a disturbing pose. Elsewhere, the younger, more impulsive Max Kerkerian looks into the desecration of a girl's grave, a child who disappeared years earlier. Both men work alone at first, and the cases appear unrelated, but a link between them soon emerges, and further killings follow. Their separate inquiries push them toward the mountains and a truth neither anticipated.
This French crime thriller from 2000 was directed by Mathieu Kassovitz, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jean-Christophe Grangé. It was Kassovitz's third feature, coming after La Haine and Assassin(s) and before Gothika and Babylon A.D. Jean Reno plays Niemans and Vincent Cassel plays Kerkerian, with Nadia Farès, Dominique Sanda, Karim Belkhadra and Jean-Pierre Cassel among the supporting cast, twenty-one credited performers in all.
Made for about 14 million dollars, the film returned roughly 60 million worldwide, a strong result for a French production of its scale. It holds a rating of 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb from around 70,000 votes and the same score on TMDB, while a critics' rating stands slightly lower at 6.4 out of 10 from 53 reviews, so audiences have rated it a little more warmly than reviewers.
