What's left behind the scenes

  • The 'Insomnia' program mentioned in the film is based on the immersive production 'Sleep No More' by the British theater company Punchdrunk. The production's plot was based on William Shakespeare's tragedy 'Macbeth' (written around 1606, first published in 1623). The theme of the production changed from year to year—just as the plot of the premiere performance of the fictional 'Insomnia' was meant to be based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 'Faust' (the first and second parts were first published in 1808 and 1832, respectively).
  • The bar scene contains references to the Last Supper (the final meal of Jesus Christ with his twelve closest disciples on the eve of his arrest, crucifixion, and death). This scene, in turn, is a reference to the divine nature of Russell, played by Gabriel Chitre. Russell orders bread and wine, which are consumed by twelve members of the program's cast and creative team (who stand in for Jesus's disciples). Furthermore, this scene marks their final meal before the premiere, making it a metaphorical Last Supper. It precedes the event in which Russell sacrifices himself for the salvation of mankind. Another reference to Jesus is the news that Russell had passed away several years before the events described but miraculously returned to life.
