North to Alaska

Set in Alaska around 1900, North to Alaska follows two gold-mining partners in Nome, George Pratt and Sam McCord. After they strike gold, the romantic George asks Sam to travel to Seattle and bring back his fiancée so they can marry. Sam finds that the woman has already wed someone else, so rather than return empty-handed he brings Angel, a French saloon performer, north with him. The arrangement grows complicated as feelings develop around her, while a rival tries to take the partners' claim.

Henry Hathaway directed the film, the eleventh of the eighteen features he made in chronological order, following Woman Obsessed and preceding Seven Thieves. Wendell Mayes, Ben Hecht and John Lee Mahin wrote the screenplay, and Hathaway produced with Charles K. Feldman and John Lee Mahin. John Wayne and Stewart Granger play Sam and George, with Capucine as Angel, Ernie Kovacs as Frankie Canon, Fabian as George's brother Billy, and Mickey Shaughnessy among a credited cast of forty.

Released by 20th Century Fox on a budget of four million dollars, the film runs 122 minutes and blends comedy, romance and Western elements. It holds a 6.9 rating on IMDb from roughly 9,200 votes and a 6.5 on TMDB from about 137 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 from eight reviews sits below the audience scores, indicating that reviewers were less favourable toward the film than general viewers were.
