Censor

Set in Britain during the 1980s, Censor follows Enid Baines, a film censor who takes evident pride in her work at the classification board. She screens violent material and removes the most disturbing images, believing she is protecting audiences from harm. Her sense of duty is bound up with guilt over the disappearance of her sister years earlier, a loss she has never been able to fully accept; her parents have since had the sister declared dead. When a low-budget horror film crosses her desk and appears to echo details of that disappearance, Enid sets out to find the people behind it and learn where the footage came from, a search that blurs the line between the film and her own memories.

The film is the feature debut of director Prano Bailey-Bond, who wrote the screenplay with Anthony Fletcher. Niamh Algar plays Enid, with Michael Smiley, Nicholas Burns, Vincent Franklin, Sophia La Porta and Adrian Schiller among the supporting cast. Helen Sara Jones produced, and the film was made by Film4 Productions, the BFI, Rook Films and Ffilm Cymru Wales.

Released in June 2021, Censor runs 84 minutes. On IMDb it holds 5.9/10 from around 23,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.8/10 from roughly 500 votes, while a film critics' rating stands at 7.3/10 from 167 reviews, a noticeably higher figure than either audience score.
