What's left behind the scenes

  • Hooch is a Dogue de Bordeaux.
  • John Larroquette, Jack Nicholson, Bill Murray, and Chevy Chase were considered for the role of Scott Turner.
  • Dudley Moore declined to play Turner.
  • This was the last film of actor John McIntire.
  • Henry Winkler was initially approved as the film's director. However, after two weeks of filming, he was fired by Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was dissatisfied with his work.
  • An alternative ending was filmed in which Hooch survives. Both endings were tested with different audiences, who reacted to them similarly. However, the original ending, where Hooch dies, evoked a passionate emotional response from viewers. Disney’s head of production, Jeffrey Katzenberg, decided to use the original ending because that’s what the directors wanted.
  • In an interview, Tom Hanks said that the film could have been much more successful if Hooch hadn't died.
  • The scene where Hooch dies was filmed last. Hanks had become very attached to Beasley during filming, so he was able to cry imagining he would never see the dog again.
  • Filming took place in California from January 23 to April 28, 1989.
