Short description
This fantasy horror film is a loose adaptation of the Divine Comedy. It follows Dante as he travels through hell and purgatory accompanied by the poet Virgil. Along their journey, they encounter demons and various historical and contemporary figures, eventually witnessing Lucifer before returning to the world above. The visual style of the production was inspired by the illustrations of Gustav Doré.
Produced by Milano Films in Italy, the movie is the first feature film from that country and the oldest fully preserved feature film in existence. It was directed by Giuseppe de Liguoro, Francesco Bertolini, and Adolfo Padovan. The cast features Salvatore Papa as Dante Alighieri and Arturo Pirovano as Virgilio, with Emilise Beretta appearing as Beatrice and Augusto Milla as Lucifer. Giuseppe de Liguoro also performed multiple roles, playing Farinata degli Uberti, Pier Delle Vigne, and the Count Ugolino.
The film is noted for its use of theatrical and cinematic special effects, including superimpositions and elaborate sets. It holds a consistent reception among viewers, with a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb based on 103 votes and a matching 6.6/10 on TMDB from 162 votes.
