What's left behind the scenes

  • Anthony Hopkins was first on the list of candidates for the main villainous role.
  • Liam Neeson, Mel Gibson, Sam Neill, Hugh Grant, and Lambert Wilson all auditioned for the role of James Bond, but Pierce Brosnan ultimately got the part.
  • Sean Bean also auditioned for the role of James Bond for the film 'The Living Daylights', but the role went to Timothy Dalton at that time.
  • GoldenEye is the name of Fleming's estate, where all 14 books about Agent 007 were created, and where the writer also hosted friends. The estate was sold to Bob Marley after the writer's death.
  • Valery Nikolaev was considered for the role that ultimately went to Alan Cumming.
  • The first Bond film where the opening credits (where the viewer looks at James Bond through the barrel of a gun) were created using computer graphics.
  • During filming, some changes had to be made to the plot due to its similarities to the plot of James Cameron's action film 'True Lies' (1994).
  • While the script was being worked on, producers believed that Timothy Dalton would reprise the role of agent 007, and the character was written with Dalton in mind.
  • The first film in the franchise shot after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, and also the first Bond film shot in Russia, specifically in St. Petersburg. The airport scenes, however, were filmed in Surrey, England, and the car chase with the tank – in London and on a studio lot. (The latter was done for safety reasons and to save money.)
  • Instead of bourbon, Judi Dench pretended to sip from a glass of apple juice with a couple of glass shards added instead of ice, and Pierce Brosnan’s character drank iced tea instead of a vodka martini.
  • The first film in the 'Bond' series where the head of 'MI6' is played by a woman (Judi Dench). The idea of making 'M' a woman was proposed in 1985 by Lois Maxwell (1927-2007), who played Miss Moneypenny in the franchise's films from 1962 to 1985. Director Martin Campbell was the first to use this idea.
  • Before filming began, Pierce Brosnan injured his arm. This happened at his home in Malibu in the bathroom, so in some scenes in the film, it's not his hand that is shown, but the hand of his 22-year-old son Christopher (at the time of filming, he was studying as a third assistant in the second unit).
  • Bond's main adversary, Agent 006 Alec Trevelyan, was originally named Augustus Trevelyan in the first version of the script, and he was supposed to be Bond's mentor; there were even plans for Trevelyan to be much older. The creators wanted to cast Anthony Hopkins in the role, but he declined. Alan Rickman also turned down the offer to play Agent 006, stating that he was tired of playing villains. Finally, Sean Bean was cast after the script was rewritten.
  • Sean Bean also auditioned for the role of James Bond for the film 'The Living Daylights', but the role went to Timothy Dalton at the time.
