What's left behind the scenes
- In some details, the film's screenplay differs from the books by Margit Auer, which served as its literary source. For example, in this adaptation, all students can communicate with magical creatures, whereas in the books, a student could only communicate with 'their' magical animal.
- Over 3,500 children auditioned for the roles.
- Emilia Mayer had previously read Margit Auer's books and learned about the casting call from a school friend. Ultimately, she was chosen for the role of Ida Kronenberg.
- During filming, puppets were used in place of the magical animals, and then replaced with 3D models created by 30 animators during post-production.
