Short description

Ida is a new student who struggles to fit in at her school. This changes when her teacher, Miss Cornfield, introduces the students to magical animals that can speak and possess unique personalities. Ida and another outcast named Benni are the first to receive companions, a clever fox and a wise tortoise. Together with their pets, the children must keep the animals a secret from adults while working to solve a mystery involving thefts occurring throughout the school.

This adventure family fantasy was directed by Gregor Schnitzler, marking the first of three listed films in his career. The movie features Emilia Maier as Ida Kronenberg, Leonard Artur Conrads as Benjamin Schubert, and Nadja Uhl as Mary Cornfield. A total of 20 cast members and 41 crew members are credited in the production.

The film was produced in Germany and Austria with a budget of 12 million USD, eventually earning 22 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is mixed, with a rating of 5.4/10 based on 1,100 votes on IMDb and a higher score of 6.3/10 from 105 votes on TMDB.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During filming, puppets were used in place of the magical animals, and then replaced with 3D models created by 30 animators during post-production.
  • Over 3,500 children auditioned for the roles.
  • Emilia Mayer had previously read Margit Auer's books and learned about the casting call from a school friend. Ultimately, she was chosen for the role of Ida Kronenberg.
  • In some details, the film's screenplay differs from the books by Margit Auer, which served as its literary source. For example, in this adaptation, all students can communicate with magical creatures, whereas in the books, a student could only communicate with 'their' magical animal.
