What's left behind the scenes

  • Upon its release, the film received extremely negative reviews in Mexico, with outrage directed at Luis Buñuel, as this foreigner dared to depict the country's problems with poverty and crime on screen. Mexican critics and audiences viewed the film differently only after Buñuel received the award for best director at Cannes.
  • The film was released in Mexico in 1950. It was pulled from distribution after three days due to the reaction of an outraged press, government, and audiences from the upper and middle classes.
