What's left behind the scenes

  • David Dobkin originally intended to direct with Will Ferrell in the lead role, but this pairing fell apart in the summer of 2009 due to a disagreement.
  • Chris Tucker was considered for the role of Jamarcus.
  • The film was originally titled "Neighborhood Watch," but the title was changed due to events surrounding the murder of Trayvon Martin (he was killed by neighborhood watch patrolman George Zimmerman).
  • Filming took place from September 2011 to January 20, 2012.
  • By agreeing to a role in Akiva Schaffer's film, Jonah Hill had to turn down an offer to star in Quentin Tarantino's dramatic western, "Django Unchained" (2012), although he greatly valued filming with Tarantino, believing it to be a necessary step in establishing himself as a dramatic actor. Delays in the start of Tarantino's film shoot forced him to look for other projects and roles.
  • It took Jonah Hill two weeks to master the butterfly knife (a type of knife from the Philippines, named for the motion of the handle halves when opening the tool, which resembles the flutter of a fan or butterfly wings).
