Short description
An English nurse and an American soldier on the Italian front during World War I fall in love, but the horrors surrounding them test their romance to the limit.
What's left behind the scenes
- To take part in this film, Rock Hudson turned down leading roles in 'Sayonara' (1957) and 'Ben-Hur' (1959), later calling this move the biggest mistake of his life.
- The film was to be directed by John Huston, but he was removed by producer David O. Selznick due to disagreements over Ben Hecht's screenplay. Huston planned to cast Gregory Peck in the lead role, who had previously starred successfully in another adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro,' but he was also rejected by the producer.
