The sons are named Lucas and Elias – just as the brothers who played these roles in the original 2014 film by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz were actually named.
The mother and father are the only ones of all six characters in the film who are never addressed by name.
In the original film by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, which this film is a remake of, Lucas's death is not explained. Viewers of the remake, however, learn that Lucas was killed by Elias, who accidentally pulled the trigger of a loaded firearm. The original hints that Lucas drowned by accident (the boys were playing in the water, arguing about who could hold their breath the longest, and the viewer never sees Lucas surface for air).
