Incantation

Incantation is a Taiwanese horror film about Li Ro-nan, a woman haunted by a curse she brought upon herself six years earlier. While making a video with friends who styled themselves as ghost hunters, she violated a religious taboo in a remote village, and misfortune afterward fell on those close to her. Her parents died, and she gave up her newborn daughter. Believing she has learned how to handle the supernatural force, she brings the child back, only for signs of the curse to appear around the girl. The film draws on the account of a family who believed spirits had possessed them.

Kevin Ko directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Zhang Zhe Wai, and also produced with Yang Xu Fen. It was his second feature, following A Choo in 2020. Hsuan-yen Tsai plays Li Ro-nan, with Ven Kao, Sin-Ting Huang, Sean Lin, Wen Ching-Yu and Chen Zhao Fei in supporting roles. Made in Taiwan with a worldwide gross of about six million dollars, it earned a critics' rating of 7.4 out of 10 from 14 reviews, higher than its audience scores: 6.3 on IMDb from 29,000 votes and 6.8 on TMDB from 865 votes.
