What's left behind the scenes

  • At the 10-minute mark of the film, Arthur Shelby's date of birth is listed on the headstone as March 14, 1895. This date contradicts the chronology of the original series, which implies that Arthur was born in 1887. This also means that the birth dates of his younger brothers would have to occur 8 years later.
  • Rebecca Ferguson mentioned in one of her interviews that she agreed to work with Tom Harper in order to collaborate with Cillian Murphy.
  • Harry Kirton's character (who played Finn Shelby in the series 'Peaky Blinders', 2013-2022) does not appear on screen in this project. He isn't even in the family photographs in the home of Tommy, played by Cillian Murphy. The actor himself declined to be in this project, stating that he did not want to become a one-role actor. Screenwriter Steven Knight confirmed that the character is alive and living in Liverpool in the 1940s, although he is never even mentioned.
  • Cillian Murphy invited Barry Keoghan to play Duke Shelby via text message. Keoghan had texted Murphy to wish him a Happy Father's Day, and Murphy replied by offering him the role.
  • During his period of voluntary exile, Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, writes an autobiography titled 'The Immortal Man'. Screenwriter Steven Knight came up with about four chapters of the manuscript, excerpts of which are quoted by a voice-over and pages of which are shown in close-up.
  • The fight between the characters played by Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan (Tommy Shelby and Duke Shelby, respectively) took place in a pigsty in a town in the county of Merseyside. The filmmakers specifically brought in mud to the filming location; however, it mixed with pig excrement, and Keoghan contracted an infection during the filming of this scene.
  • In the original version of the film, Barry Keoghan's character won the fight in the pigsty, but it was re-edited so that the victory went to the character played by Cillian Murphy. At certain points in the fight, the actors were replaced by stunt doubles. By the end of the brawl, Keoghan was so covered in mud that only his eyes were glistening on his face.
  • Production designer Jacqueline Abrams stated that the fight in the pigsty was not in Steven Knight's original script, and the idea to film such a scene only emerged during location scouting. The scene was filmed on Barry Keoghan's first day of shooting. The cockfights, which were filmed at the same location, were removed from the film during editing.
