What's left behind the scenes

  • At the time the film was made, Ron Perlman did not know French and was the only American actor on set. Nevertheless, he diligently memorized all his lines and made no mistakes.
  • The costumes for the film were designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier.
  • To achieve the film's slightly distorted color scheme, the actors' faces were painted white, and the color palette was adjusted until the faces gained a natural hue.
  • The twins playing the octopus were not conjoined, despite the character being so. They were fitted with a third artificial leg, but were unable to walk with it.
  • During filming, Ron Perlman was bitten by a dog, and Judith Vittet – by a mouse.
  • Jean-Paul Gaultier initially began to show Jean-Pierre Jeunet costume sketches, but he said that they were not included in the film's budget, to which Gaultier replied that he would cover all expenses himself.
