What's left behind the scenes

  • Spirit is a Kiger Mustang stallion. These were horses of Spanish conquistadors that broke away from Mustang herds.
  • Dreamworks used a Donner Mustang, purchased by the company for $50,000, as a model for drawing Spirit.
  • It took over 9 months to create the scene that begins the film; it contains a total of 700 elements in the background, and an average of 30 layered backgrounds are used in each frame.
  • Only real horses were recorded for the sound design.
  • Tom Hanks or Robert Redford were considered for the role of the narrator.
