Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron follows a wild mustang born free in the American West who is captured by the United States Cavalry and refuses to be broken. Though he forms a bond with a young Lakota man named Little Creek and falls for a mare called Rain, the horse remains set on getting back to his herd and the open country he came from.

The 2002 animated adventure was directed by Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook, the first of five features Asbury would go on to direct, ahead of Shrek 2, Gnomeo & Juliet, Smurfs: The Lost Village and UglyDolls. Matt Damon voices Spirit, with James Cromwell as the Colonel, Daniel Studi as Little Creek and supporting turns from Chopper Bernet, Jeff LeBeau and John Rubano. John Fusco and Michael Lucker wrote the screenplay, and Jeffrey Katzenberg and Mireille Soria produced for DreamWorks.

Made for about 80 million dollars, the film took in roughly 123 million worldwide. Audiences have rated it 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb across some 94,000 votes, and 7.7 out of 10 on TMDB. A critics' score of 6.5 out of 10 from 123 reviews places it somewhat below the audience response. It runs 83 minutes.
