What's left behind the scenes

  • When Specks and Tucker enter Eliza's house, a drawing of African tribes hangs on the wall. The same drawing can be seen in the films 'Paranormal Activity 2' (2010) and 'Paranormal Activity 3' (2011).
  • Much of the film was shot at Linda Vista Community Hospital, which also served as the location for scenes in an abandoned hospital. Filming took place on two floors. One floor was used for flashback scenes, and the other for episodes taking place in the present day. The building turned out to be spacious enough, and the crew were able to transform some rooms into spaces completely unrelated to healthcare (a police station, Lorraine's house dining room, Cali's bedroom, and the Distance Place).
  • Director James Wan can be spotted on the desktop wallpaper along with Specs and Tucker.
  • The film was shot using an Arri Alexa camera.
  • The film was shot over 26 days at real locations in Los Angeles. Filming began in January 2013 at the historic Smith estate in the Highland Park area of northeast Los Angeles. This well-preserved Victorian mansion was presented by the filmmakers as the home of Lorraine Lambert, where her son Josh and his family temporarily stayed. The two-story building was constructed in 1887. Originally, the house belonged to a judge who was interested in occultism and even wrote a book on the subject.
  • Producers rented one building in Highland Park for a week to transform it into the home of Alice Reynie. Most of the scenes were filmed in the living room and basement of a two-story mansion built in 1908. The large basement was divided into two parts. One half served as the basement of Lorraine Lambert’s house, the second half was draped as a reading room in Alice’s house. Filming also took place in a 1910 mansion in the Adams-Normandie area of central Los Angeles. The vacant building is known as the Beckett Residence.
  • At the 26th minute, when Barbara Hershey’s character wakes up, the film 'Carnival of Souls' (1962) can be seen on the television in the room.
  • When Josh lays the unconscious Rinai on the couch, she is lying face up. In the next frame, her head is turned to the side.
  • Josh's childhood photos do not match those in the first part of the film. For example, in the photo of Josh against the backdrop of a car in the first part of the film, only the ghost's head is visible inside the car, while in the second part, the ghost is visible in full growth. Also, the faces of the actors playing young Lorraine and Josh in childhood differ in all the photographs.
  • At the 26th minute, when Barbara Hershey’s character wakes up, the film “Carnival of Souls” (1962) can be seen on the television in the room.
