Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande

Set in South London during the racially tense atmosphere of the early 1970s, this documentary follows the journey of Cymande. The group of Black musicians combined elements of soul, funk, jazz, and Caribbean rhythms to create a sound centered on a message of peace. While they found success in the United States, they faced indifference in the United Kingdom, which led to their eventual disbandment. The film explores how their music influenced subsequent generations of artists and hip hop musicians, eventually leading to the group's reunion after forty years.

The film was directed by Tim MacKenzie-Smith, who also produced the project alongside Matt Wyllie and Beatrice Read. This was the first of two films directed by MacKenzie-Smith in 2024, followed by Jude: Out of the Floodlights. The production was a collaboration between VeryMuchSo Productions, Ventureland, and Crawshay Films. The cast features appearances by Mark Ronson, Cut Chemist, Kool DJ Red Alert, Donald Johnson Jr., and Vincent Mason, all appearing as themselves.
