Conan the Barbarian follows a boy whose parents are killed and whose village is destroyed by the warrior Thulsa Doom. Taken into slavery, he grows to adulthood in chains, developing remarkable strength through years of brutal labour. Once freed, he becomes a fighter and sets out to find the man who destroyed his family. Along the way he joins two thieves, Valeria and Subotai, and the companions find themselves drawn into the affairs of King Osric, whose daughter has joined Doom's cult. Doom leads a devoted following willing to die for him, and Conan must grow stronger still if he is to have any chance against him.
John Milius directed the film, his fourth feature after Dillinger, The Wind and the Lion and Big Wednesday, from a screenplay he wrote with Oliver Stone. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Conan, with James Earl Jones as Thulsa Doom, Sandahl Bergman as Valeria and Gerry Lopez as Subotai. The production, mounted by Dino and Raffaella De Laurentiis, was made partly in Mexico and cost about 20 million US dollars.
Released in March 1982, the film took roughly 69 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 173,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 42 reviews places it in similar territory to the general audience response. It runs 130 minutes.
