Rome Adventure follows Prudence Bell, a young woman who leaves her job at a New England women's college after being reprimanded for lending a student a romance novel. She travels to Italy hoping to find a freer attitude toward love, takes a position at a small bookshop in Rome, and meets Don Porter, a young architecture student recovering from a broken relationship. The two set off to see the country together, and their traveling companionship turns into something more.
The film was directed, written and produced by Delmer Daves, released by Warner Bros. in 1962. It sits between A Summer Place and Spencer's Mountain in a directing career that runs from Destination Tokyo in 1943 through ten earlier features. Suzanne Pleshette plays Prudence, with Troy Donahue as Don, Rossano Brazzi as the cultured Roberto Orlandi, Angie Dickinson as Lyda Kent and Constance Ford as Daisy Bronson; jazz trumpeter Al Hirt appears as himself. The Italian settings and the romance between its young leads are the film's focus.
On IMDb the film holds a 6.4 rating from roughly 1,600 votes. On TMDB it stands at 5.8 from a much smaller sample of 16 votes; both figures point to a modest, mixed response rather than strong enthusiasm.
