Chopper

Chopper is a crime drama about Mark Brandon Read, an Australian criminal who set out to build a reputation as one of the country's most feared and notorious figures. Based on Read's own writings about his life, the film follows his time in and out of prison, where violence is a constant currency and where he fights, manipulates and provokes those around him. His efforts to be transferred, his willingness to endure and inflict injury, and his talent for self-invention all feed a legend that may owe as much to his own storytelling as to fact.

The film marks Andrew Dominik's directorial debut and the first feature he also wrote. It was produced by Michele Bennett, with Eric Bana in the lead role as Read. The cast includes Vince Colosimo, Simon Lyndon, David Field, Dan Wyllie and Bill Young. Dominik went on to direct The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly, Blonde and Bono: Stories of Surrender.

Chopper runs 94 minutes and was released in 2000. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1/10 from around 44,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.8/10 from roughly 436 votes. A film critics' rating of 7/10 from 80 reviews places it in similar territory to the audience scores, indicating a generally favourable but not unanimous response.
