What's left behind the scenes

  • Michael Crichton (1942-2008), the author of the novel (1998) on which this film is based, offered the rights to adapt it to anyone interested without any fee, but on the condition that work on the future film would begin immediately. Ironically, he completely disliked the resulting film – so much so that Crichton vowed never to sell the rights to adapt his books again. This continued until his old friend Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to the novel "Pirate Latitudes" (2009) after the writer's death.
  • The Battle of Castle Gard is a fictional event. The film crew traveled to several European castles of that period (late 1300s) to depict the castles and cities as realistically and plausibly as possible. Historical reenactors played the soldiers in the battle scenes.
