What's left behind the scenes

  • In drift competitions, points are awarded not for speed or placement, but for skill in navigating corners in controlled drifts. Drift racing is a competition on a very winding track.
  • Volkswagen allocated four prototype samples of its new R32 model and 4 Volkswagen Touran minivans for filming.
  • Toyo Tire, a company specializing in tire production, provided approximately 4000 units of its products for the filming, half of which were used during the shooting process.
  • Approximately 600 extras of Asian appearance were involved in filming scenes on the streets of Los Angeles.
  • For filming, an all-wheel drive Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII was converted to rear-wheel drive. The same was done with two prototype Volkswagen R32s.
  • One of the five 'Mustangs' used during filming was equipped with an engine and transmission from a Nissan Skyline GT-R. The film's heroes completed this operation in just one evening, although in reality, this transformation of the car required significantly more time.
  • Cars intended for the domestic Japanese market were purchased for the filming. All of these cars have right-hand drive, making their legal operation in the US impossible.
  • More than 100 cars were wrecked during filming.
  • Vin Diesel agreed to appear in the final scene because he was promised a producer credit on the fourth installment.
  • When the main character is learning to drift on the pier, he breaks the car's rear spoiler during his first drift in the opening scene. In subsequent scenes, the spoiler appears and disappears. Once he has mastered drifting and completed a lap around the pier, the spoiler is back on the car.
  • One of the five "Mustangs" used during filming was equipped with an engine and transmission from a Nissan Skyline GT-R. The film's crew completed this modification in just one evening, although in reality, this car transformation took considerably more time.
