Operation Petticoat
Short description
Operation Petticoat is a Second World War comedy set in the Pacific in the weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Lieutenant Commander Matt Sherman commands the Sea Tiger, an ageing submarine badly damaged in an air raid in Manila Bay and due for the scrap heap. Sherman talks his superiors into letting him patch the boat up rather than abandon her, and Lieutenant Nicholas Holden, a smooth-talking officer with a talent for bending the rules, is brought aboard to scrounge the parts needed to get her running. The work drags on, equipment and supplies are hard to come by, and the crew's problems multiply when a group of stranded army nurses has to be taken on board. The film follows the improvised repairs, the friction between the by-the-book commander and his inventive second officer, and the awkwardness of a warship suddenly carrying women among its crew.
Blake Edwards directed, working from a screenplay by Maurice Richlin and Stanley Shapiro, with Robert Arthur producing. It was the first of the 27 features Edwards directed, ahead of Breakfast at Tiffany's in 1961. Cary Grant plays Sherman and Tony Curtis plays Holden, with Joan O'Brien and Dina Merrill among the nurses, and Gene Evans and Dick Sargent in support; 56 cast members are credited. Released on 5 December 1959 and running 124 minutes, the film took about 7 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 from over fifteen thousand votes, and on TMDB 7.2 from around four hundred.
What's left behind the scenes
- The episode with the sunken truck was inspired by a real incident in 1944, when on August 9th, the American submarine SS-287 Bowfin tracked four Japanese ships to the port of Minamidaito and attacked them with all six torpedoes from its forward tubes. The torpedoes hit three ships and sank two of them, but one torpedo went off course and hit the pier. An автобус was parked there, which was blown into the water.
- The American submarine USS Seadragon did indeed go to sea painted red. It was originally painted black, but the paint was scorched during one of the air raids and began to peel while the boat was at sea. During this voyage, the boat sank three Japanese ships.
