The Bank Shot

Walter Upjohn Ballentine is a career criminal serving time in a high-security prison when his old associates arrange his escape. They want him for a job unlike any he has pulled before: a bank has been moved into a mobile home while its new building goes up, leaving it vulnerable. Ballantine decides that rather than simply rob the place, the better plan is to take the entire structure and open it somewhere safer. He assembles a crew that includes his former partner, a young financial backer, a former FBI man and a safecracker, while the relentless lawman known as Bulldog Streiger tries to catch up with them.

The film is a crime comedy directed by Gower Champion, whose career had been built largely in the theatre, and it was written by Wendell Mayes and produced by Hal Landers and Bobby Roberts. George C. Scott leads the cast as Ballantine, with Joanna Cassidy, Sorrell Booke, Clifton James, Bob Balaban and Bibi Osterwald in supporting roles.

Released in 1974 and running 83 minutes, the film sits modestly with audiences. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from around 1,300 votes, and on TMDB it also scores 5.4, though from a much smaller pool of 33 votes. The consistency across both suggests a largely indifferent reception rather than a sharply divided one.
