David Dunn, a security guard, is the sole survivor of a train crash outside Philadelphia that kills every other passenger. He walks away without a single injury, and he has no explanation for it. His questions draw the attention of Elijah Price, a comic book dealer whose bones break at the slightest strain and who has spent years working out a theory about people with extraordinary abilities. Price believes Dunn's survival was no accident and that the two of them are connected.
M. Night Shyamalan directed and wrote the film, his second feature as director, following The Sixth Sense and preceding Signs. Bruce Willis plays Dunn, Samuel L. Jackson plays Price, and Robin Wright, Spencer Treat Clark, Charlayne Woodard and Eamonn Walker appear in supporting roles. The production cost about 75 million dollars and took roughly 248 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb, viewers rate the film 7.3 out of 10 from around 466,000 votes, while on TMDB it holds 7.1 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of about 10,000 votes. A critics' score of 6.9 out of 10 from 173 reviews places it close to the audience ratings rather than sharply apart from them, suggesting a broadly similar response across both groups.

- In “Die Hard with a Vengeance” (1995), Inspector Cobb (Larry Bryggman) tells John McClane (Bruce Willis) that “next month he’ll be working security.” In this film, Bruce played a security guard.
- "Unbreakable" was intended to be the first film in a trilogy, but its box office failure thwarted the original plans. However, "Glass", filmed 19 years later and serving as a sequel to both M.
