- The real Gary Johnson died at the very beginning of work on the film. Director and screenwriter Richard Linklater never met him in person and only spoke to him once on the phone.
- According to the script, the plot unfolded in Houston, where Gary Johnson lived, but for financial reasons, the filmmakers moved the setting to New Orleans.
