Short description
Alex and Marcus, a couple, argue at a party, and Alex leaves alone. Walking home, she is attacked in an underpass and raped. When Marcus and Alex's former partner Pierre learn what happened, the two men set out to find the attacker and take justice into their own hands. Their search leads them through the night to a dark club, where they believe the man is hiding.
Gaspar Noé wrote and directed this French crime drama, his third feature after Carne and I Stand Alone. Monica Bellucci plays Alex, Vincent Cassel plays Marcus, and Albert Dupontel plays Pierre, with Jo Prestia as the attacker and Philippe Nahon in a supporting part. Christophe Rossignon produced the film, which runs 97 minutes.
The film was released in 2002 on a budget of about 4 million dollars and took roughly 7 million dollars at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from around 162,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7.2 from over 3,400 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.2 from 129 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film gained notoriety due to two scenes: a seven-minute scene of the anal rape of the heroine Alex, played by Monica Bellucci, and the brutal murder of a patron in the gay club 'Straight Gut' (over twenty blows to the head with a fire extinguisher).
- The opening scenes of the film are supplemented with an almost inaudible low-frequency sound, similar to the rumble of an earthquake. This noise causes anxiety, mild nausea, and dizziness in many people. It is believed that the sound design of "Irreversible" is the main reason why viewers left the screening within the first thirty minutes. This is precisely the reaction that director Gaspar Noé was counting on.
- The film's tagline, “Time destroys everything,” is the first phrase heard in the film, and also the last.
- The music for the film was composed by Thomas Bangalter, a member of the electronic duo Daft Punk. In addition to the original music, the film also features Ludwig van Beethoven's Seventh Symphony and Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony.
- In one of the scenes towards the end of the film, a poster for "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) can be seen above Monica Bellucci's head. According to Gaspar Noé, it is his favorite film.
