BJA Samuel is a British writer, filmmaker and illustrator whose work spans fiction, experimental cinema, visual storytelling and explorations of art, culture and history.

As a writer, Samuel creates darkly imaginative fiction concerned with grief, morality, human desire and violence, often combining psychological and philosophical ideas with surreal or unsettling imagery.

As a filmmaker, BJA Samuel works primarily with archival and found footage, creating experimental documentaries and visual essays from interviews, television material, educational films, early cinema and other fragments of the moving-image archive. His films explore the lives and ideas of writers, artists and thinkers, while also examining broader questions of reality, memory, technology, consciousness and culture.

Rather than relying on conventional documentary narration, BJA Samuel often constructs meaning through montage, juxtaposition, archival voices, music and carefully selected images. His films treat found footage not simply as historical evidence, but as material that can be recontextualised to reveal unexpected connections and new ways of seeing.

His filmmaking includes explorations of J. G. Ballard and Philip K. Dick, alongside works drawing on early cinema and archival culture, as well as films about the Earth, history and the human need for meaning. Across his writing, illustration and filmmaking, BJA Samuel is interested in the meeting point between imagination and reality, and in the strange worlds that emerge when familiar things are viewed from an unfamiliar perspective.
