What's left behind the scenes

  • The series' protagonist, Walter White, is known in the criminal world by the pseudonym Heisenberg, referring to the name of the 1932 Nobel laureate in physics, Werner Karl Heisenberg.
  • The opening credits show the formula for methamphetamine (C10 H15 N) and its molecular mass of 149.24; various chemical elements are displayed in the capital letters of the names and throughout the intro sequence.
  • RJ Mitte, who plays Walter Jr., lives with cerebral palsy, just like his character.
  • The first season was intended to consist of nine episodes, but due to the writers' strike, only seven were filmed.
  • Writer Stephen King spoke highly of the series, calling it the best screenplay on TV.
  • In the series, Bryan Cranston serves not only as an actor but also as the director of several episodes.
  • The surnames of Walter and Jesse—White and Pinkman—are a reference to Quentin Tarantino's film 'Reservoir Dogs' (1991).
  • The series entered the 2014 Guinness World Records as the 'highest-rated series' after scoring 99 out of 100 on the MetaCritic portal.
  • In Season 3, Episode 13, a book by Stephen King, the short story collection 'Everything's Eventual', can be seen in Gale's apartment.
  • When the characters in the series smoke methamphetamine, the actors actually have to smoke sugar or crushed hard candies, without inhaling the smoke.
  • In March 2015, Yahoo compiled a top list called 'The 99 Greatest TV Characters Since Tony Soprano'. Characters from 'Breaking Bad' took three spots: Jesse Pinkman at 64th, Gustavo Fring at 30th, and Walter White in 2nd place.
  • The idea of a mobile laboratory, which served as the basis for the series, occurred to Vince Gilligan during a conversation with his acquaintance, writer Thomas Schnauz, while discussing their current unemployment. At the time, it was jokingly suggested to set up a mobile meth lab to travel across the country and make money selling the drug.
  • Initially, the script designated Riverside, California, as the setting, but at the suggestion of Sony, Albuquerque was chosen due to the favorable financial incentives provided by the state of New Mexico.
  • The average cost per episode is 3 million dollars.
  • In early August 2011, negotiations began for the filming of the fifth and final season. The cable channel AMC proposed limiting the season to 6-8 episodes instead of the planned 13 to reduce costs. However, Sony Pictures Television, the production company working on the series, rejected this proposal and approached other cable networks in case an agreement with AMC could not be reached. Ultimately, on August 14, 2011, AMC renewed Breaking Bad for a fifth season consisting of 16 episodes.
  • The idea of using wide shots in the series belonged to Vince Gilligan, who recommended that cinematographer Michael Slovis watch the Western 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' to get a better sense of the desired result.
  • The scientific accuracy of the script and dialogue was verified by Donna Nelson, a professor of organic chemistry at the University of Oklahoma. She also wrote all the chemical formulas and equations used in the series. According to Vince Gilligan, this was her own initiative; she liked the series so much that she offered her help as a consultant.
  • The rising popularity of the series Breaking Bad echoed across various spheres of real life. Many reports pertain to crime chronicles. The show's popularity has been linked to an increase in demand for methamphetamine in the UK and Europe. For example, Germany saw a 51% increase in the use of Class A drugs (which include methamphetamine) in 2014. Attempted methamphetamine smuggling into the UK rose by 400% in 2013. It was reported that meth dealers began using blue food coloring in hopes of attracting the television audience and increasing sales. News reports mentioned the series in connection with cases of disposing of bodies by dissolving them in acid, the arrest of school teachers engaged in drug trafficking, and drug smuggling attempts by terminally ill criminals. It even came to the point where a real-life Walter White, who manufactured methamphetamine, was arrested.
  • For the pilot episode, Cranston gained ten pounds (about 4.5 kg) and dyed his hair brown to conceal his natural red shade. Cranston worked with costume designer Kathleen Detoro and makeup artist Frida Valenzuela, who sought to give Walter White the appearance of an unremarkable, 'soft,' and 'weak' man.
  • The 'Save Walter White' website, created by Walter Jr. in the second season, actually exists (http://www.savewalterwhite.com/).
  • During the filming of the episode 'Half Measures,' Wendy had to portray a street prostitute. A random passerby mistook her for a real sex worker and tried to negotiate a price. Due to this misunderstanding, filming had to be briefly delayed.
  • In the DVD commentary for the first season, Vince Gilligan revealed that in the original version, the character Jesse Pinkman was supposed to die by the end of the season. However, the creators changed their decision after appreciating Aaron Paul's performance.
  • In the 2nd episode of the 1st season ('Cat's in the Bag'), while Jesse is sitting and thinking about what to do with Emilio, the movie 'Hocus Pocus' (1949) is playing on the television.
  • Walter White begins synthesizing methamphetamine of a characteristic blue color. Throughout the series, the point is repeatedly made that the resulting product has an extremely high degree of purity. For example, in the first episode of the fourth season, Gale Boetticher claims that Walter White's methamphetamine is 99% pure. The purity and color become a kind of trademark. In reality, however, crystal-pure methamphetamine is a colorless-white substance, and any color tints indicate the presence of impurities.
  • In 2013, the show 'MythBusters' conducted two experiments related to the series 'Breaking Bad.' The show's creators decided to test the accuracy of two scenes from the first season. First, they questioned the destructive power of hydrofluoric acid, which, according to the show, dissolved the bathtub floor, the floor, and the ceiling in Jesse Pinkman's house. Second, they tested the explosive potential of fulminated mercury, which Walter White took to his meeting with Tuco Salamanca. As a result of the experiments, both scenes, as depicted in the series, were deemed physically impossible.
  • For the lead role, Gilligan invited Bryan Cranston, with whom he had worked on the episode 'Drive' for the sixth season of 'The X-Files.' Cranston played a terminally ill antisemite who took Fox Mulder hostage. According to the script, he had to portray a character who evoked both disgust and sympathy. According to Gilligan, 'Bryan was the only actor who could do it, who managed to pull off that trick.' AMC representatives were initially skeptical of Gilligan's choice because they only knew Cranston from his role as Hal in the comedy series 'Malcolm in the Middle.' They considered John Cusack and Matthew Broderick. When both actors declined, the management watched the 'X-Files' episode featuring Cranston and agreed to cast him in the lead role.
  • The vast majority of the series was filmed in Albuquerque and its surroundings. Among the most famous urban locations is the White family home; over five seasons of filming, AMC paid the owners approximately $500,000. Only a few moments in the series were filmed outside of Albuquerque. For example, the rural scenes of the first methamphetamine cook were filmed in the Tohajiilee Indian Reservation. And the famous train heist was filmed on Spur Ranch Road in the census-designated place of Eldorado at Santa Fe.
  • Notably, the coordinates 34°59′20″ N 106°36′52″ W, where Walter White buried his savings, are actually the coordinates of Q Studios in Albuquerque, where 'Breaking Bad' was filmed.
  • In the third episode of season 4, the scene where Jesse throws crumpled dollar bills into the mouth of a sleeping man wearing a tie but no pants until one lands inside was improvised by Sam Catlin, the episode's writer. In reality, the money was thrown by prop master Trina Siopi from off-camera; she managed to land a bill in the actor's mouth on her second attempt.
  • The title of the 14th episode of season 5 is a reference to Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem 'Ozymandias,' which tells the story of a once-powerful king whose only remaining legacy is a fragment of a statue in the desert. Bryan Cranston reads the entire poem 'Ozymandias' in the trailer for this episode.
  • At the beginning of the 6th episode of the second season, Jesse smokes meth and goes to a confrontation, after which there is a close-up of his eyes as he looks through a window. His eyes are shown to be normal with normal pupils, like those of a healthy person, despite the most noticeable physical effect of methamphetamine being dilated pupils that do not react to light.
  • At the 7-minute mark of the 13th episode of season 2, Mike enters the room where Jane's lifeless body lies; however, it can be noticed that she is breathing slowly.
