What's left behind the scenes
- David Carradine had never practiced martial arts; he simply acquired some knowledge and skills in the field when he was a dancer in his youth. This detail only added to the frustration of Bruce Lee, who had also auditioned for the role of Kwai Chang Caine but was rejected in favor of Carradine.
- The Shaolin monastery sets had previously served as sets for something else in Joshua Logan's adventure musical 'Camelot' (1967). Making the necessary modifications to them proved to be inexpensive and quite simple.
- According to David Carradine, censors feared that the level of on-screen violence would be excessive and ordered that martial arts scenes in any episode last no longer than 2-3 minutes. According to the actor, they had to get creative to bypass this restriction. For example, they would show characters talking in the foreground while people practiced kung fu in the background.
- Will Smith was initially considered for the role of Caine; during his screen tests, he wore special facial prosthetics to make him look Chinese. Soon, however, it was decided that Smith looked too menacing in the role, and he was passed over. Smith later played an antagonist in the third episode of the second season.
