Short description
Based on an autobiographical novel by German World War II photographer Lothar-Guenther Buchheim, Das Boot follows the lives of a fearless U-Boat captain (Jurgen Prochnow) and his inexperienced crew as they patrol the Atlantic and Mediterranean in search of Allied vessels, taking turns as hunter and prey.

What's left behind the scenes
- Before filming began, the actors underwent long and grueling training on how to act during emergency situations aboard a submarine—for example, when it is necessary to rush to the bow or stern to help heel the vessel.
- After World War II, no Type VII-C submarines remained, so two full-scale models of the conning tower and deck were built for the film. For the interior scenes, a tank was created to simulate the hull and suspended so that it could rock up and down and side to side, allowing for the realistic filming of movement and the shocks from depth charge explosions. Only one Type VIIC/41 submarine survives—the U-995, which is currently on display at the naval museum in Laboe, Germany.
- Throughout the entire filming period, the actors were intentionally kept indoors and not allowed outside so that they would more closely resemble a submarine crew on a mission, deprived of access to fresh air.
