What's left behind the scenes
- According to screenwriter Thomas Pa'a Sibbett, the idea for the miniseries was conceived by him and Jason Momoa in 2015. It was initially intended to be a feature film told from the perspective of another character, but it ultimately became a miniseries with Kaiana as the main protagonist.
- Before filming began, Jason Momoa (who played Kaiana) was not fluent in Haitian Creole. As part of his preparation for the role, he had to take an intensive language course (he even lived with a tutor). The actor later admitted that learning Haitian Creole was more difficult than mastering the fictional Dothraki language for 'Game of Thrones' (2011-2019). At the start of filming, only about 20% of the creative team spoke Haitian Creole fluently, so the rest had to learn the language alongside Momoa.
- The filmmakers were assisted by so-called 'cultural advisors'—literally everything was done to achieve the maximum possible authenticity. Even the war canoes were constructed using local materials and based on surviving ancient evidence of their construction.
- Kaina Makua had never acted in films before. Prior to participating in this project, he was involved in canoe racing as a coach.
