What's left behind the scenes

  • Nowadays the series is considered a classic, but the results of its initial broadcast were disappointing. The project's ratings were so low that the series was cut to 43 episodes. The producers planned to shut down the project entirely, but soon the ratings began to climb.
  • Originally, the Gundam designed by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Kunio Okawara was gray, but the project's sponsors insisted it be made white, red, blue, and gold, with a view toward the subsequent release of toys.
  • The animation studio Sunrise was experiencing financial difficulties at the time, and the series' creators could only work with 79 colors, though they were later allowed to add 3 more colors to the palette.
  • The original concept developed by director and screenwriter Yoshiyuki Tomino was much darker—the main character died, and the crew of the cruiser White Base were to join forces with a character voiced by Michael Copsa (who received the actual Gundam armor), only to eventually fight him after he seized the Principality of Zeon. Shortly after the project was shut down, Tomino wrote a series of books based on this concept.
