Throughout the series, police officers are referred to as "peelers." The nickname comes from the surname of Robert Peel (1788-1859), a British politician and statesman considered the father of British policing. In 1822, he joined the government as Home Secretary, after which he implemented a series of important reforms to British criminal law and established the Metropolitan Police in London in 1829. Consequently, the nicknames "bobby" or "peeler" stuck to the police constables ("bobby" being a diminutive of "Robert," and "peeler" derived from his surname). As Peel's crime-fighting methods were adopted, the use of these nicknames spread across the country. In England, "bobby" became more established, while the nickname "peeler" became widely used in Ireland, primarily in a negative context.
