What's left behind the scenes

  • The choreographers employed in the mini-series recreated the dances of the 19th-century aristocracy. They did not simply repeat the ancient steps with precision; they studied dance manuals from the corresponding historical period, analyzed paintings and literary descriptions of dances, and then translated all of this into the language of modern cinema. It was necessary not only to copy the technique but also to convey the social status and psychology of the dancers through their movements.
  • According to one of the directors, Tom Schenkeland, adapting Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel (1958) for the screen was extremely challenging. He wanted to preserve the atmosphere of the novel—the melancholy, the decline of the aristocracy, and the clash between adherence to tradition and the desire to introduce something new—without turning the series into a dry recitation of facts. To modernize the visuals, he used more dynamic camera movements, a more pronounced contrast in lighting than usual, and a color palette that blended realism with exaggeration. All of this was done so that viewers would be participants in the events unfolding on screen, rather than mere bystanders.
  • The sets on the filming location replicated Sicily in the 1860s. The creators of the mini-series traveled throughout Sicily in advance, closely studying palaces and the homes of both the nobility and commoners. Many sets recreated real locations based on specially taken photographs. Every object shown in the frame, from cutlery to tapestries, reflected the owner's social standing and emotional state during that historical period. The color palette of the props—tarnished gold, deep red, faded green, and darkened wood—conveyed the state of the nobility, still great and majestic, but already in a state of decline. Oil lamps, candelabras, and simple candles were used for indoor lighting. In total, approximately 4,000 candles were used.
